You've seen the phrase on yogurt for years. Here's what it actually tells you.
cultures, briefly
Yogurt is milk fermented by friendly bacteria. Those bacteria, the cultures, turn milk sugar into lactic acid. That's where the tang comes from and why yogurt is thicker than milk.
live vs. not
Some products are heat treated after fermenting, which can kill the cultures. "Live and active cultures" means the bacteria are still alive in what you're eating. Freezing slows them down, but it doesn't wipe them out the way heat does.
why people care
Live cultures are a big part of why yogurt has been a staple across the Mediterranean for generations. Research on gut health is still evolving, so we won't make big promises, but plenty of people simply feel better eating real fermented foods.
- look for the cultures listed by name on the label
- shorter ingredient lists are usually a good sign
- tangy is good, it means fermentation actually happened
real yogurt tastes a little sour. that's the point.
We'd rather show you what's in the cup than tell you what it'll do for you. That's kind of our whole thing.
